My typical go to breakfast is a nutrient packed smoothie. Smoothies are a great way to start your day off on the right foot and they are the ultimate fast food! But sometimes, on a cold and grey winter morning, a chilled smoothie doesn't exactly scream comfort. On mornings like this, I skip the smoothie and opt for something a little more warming like this Quinoa Breakfast Bowl. It probably wouldn't be too tasty if I crammed in as many vegetables into this dish as I do with my smoothie, but this is still a great breakfast to start off a busy day.
1 cup quinoa flakes
2/3 cup of boiling water
2/3 cup of warm almond milk (homemade if possible)
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 cup of berries (whatever berries float your boat)
1/4 cup shredded coconut
1/4 hemp hearts
What you do
And that's it. How easy is that?!

Having healthy, ready to eat snacks is a must have in my kitchen! Without healthy snacks at my finger tips I'm much more likely to make a poor decision when a craving strikes. I love making a batch of these Almond Coconut Bites and keeping them in the freezer.
Since these bite size treats are full of protein, fibre and healthy fat they are the perfect snack to keep your energy levels high and your hunger under control.

One my favourite topics to discuss with my students and clients is the importance of fat. Yes, I said it...FAT! We absolutely need fat for optimal health. Now this is not permission to head to your local chicken wing joint and eat until the buttons on your pants pop off! But by consuming health fat from coconut, avocado, nuts, olive oil, eggs and grass fed butter (just to name a few) you can get some pretty amazing health benefits.
Benefits of consuming healthy fats
Now let's get down to business....the business of this delicious Bullet Proof Coffee. This rich and creamy drink is traditionally made with strong coffee, MCT oil and grass fed butter. But if you're like me and you try to keep your coffee intake to a minimum, you can still enjoy this beneficial beverage with my favourite coffee substitute - Dandy Blend! Dandy Blend is a rich, caffeine free powder made from dandelion root. Not only does it help curb your coffee cravings, but it is incredibly detoxifying. Just mix a scoop with boiling water and enjoy. Or add a few more ingredients to make my version of Bullet Proof Coffee!
So go on...drink your delicious, fat filled coffee and enjoy all the amazing benefits!

I was recently lucky enough to teach my Eat Well Live Well Workshop for a group of local professionals and I had a blast! The group was so eager to learn about healthy eating and how to fuel their body for a productive day at the office. One of the recipe samples I brought for everyone was my Coconut Lime Popcorn and it was a huge hit! Instead of reaching for a bag of microwave popcorn that is full of additives, GMO kernels and harmful oils you can make your own popcorn in a matter of minutes! Try out my super simple recipe below and if you want to have a Lunch & Learn workshop at your office, get more information here.
What kind of flavours do you add to your popcorn? Let me know if the comments!
Have you ever actually read the label on your favourite granola bar? For something that is usually advertised as a "healthy snack", prepackaged granola bars sure don't live up to my healthy snack standards! For this recipe, I wanted to create granola bars that were easy to make on a busy weeknight, traveled well, tasted delicious and most importantly gave me the actual nutrients I needed to fuel my body during a busy morning or afternoon.
Ingredients - Makes 8-10 bars

I remember as a child, one of my favorite foods were cinnamon buns with thick cream cheese frosting. I would even justify having them for breakfast...cinnamon buns are a breakfast food right?! Well I know better now. Having a traditional cinnamon bun with frosting can spike your blood sugar and give you one giant crash shortly after which is exactly what we want to avoid. As a healthy alternative, I have created these delicious cinnamon bun muffins that are gluten free and dairy free while being full of fiber and protein. Now this is a breakfast treat that I can get behind!
